Cloud9 defeat MIBR 3-1 to win IEM Katowice 2020 spot

It’s a good day for Cloud9 fans after the organizations recently acquired Counter-Strike: Global Offensive team finished on top of the IEM Katowice 2020 North America Closed Qualifier.

Coming in there were many question marks as to why the popular brand would have chosen to support a team that many believed hadn’t proven itself. There were some were, of course, recognized the strong showing the team had at the ESL Pro League Season 10 finals, but it wasn’t enough to sell people this was the right move. Wins over North and G2 or not, this lineup was drastically under-experienced.

Aran “Sonic” Groesbeek and company changed some more minds last night when they concluded their run through the IEM Katowice Closed Qualifier with a strong showing against a veteran squad in the form of MIBR.

The Brazilian side came in down 1-0 thanks to Cloud9’s success in the previous rounds. Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo’s team evened things up quickly though with their 16-13 victory on Train to open things up.

The resilience and ability of Cloud9 on Overpass would shine in the next map though as they crushed their opposition 16-4 and moved into Inferno.

Inferno would be where the story ends with the American and South African mix closing the series with a 16-12 victory. Ricky “floppy” Kemery would finish the 3-1 series with a +22 kill-to-death differential and 90.2 average damage per round to lead the server.

Cloud9 will travel to Poland later this month to compete at the prestigious event. Regardless of the outcome there, Cloud9 has shown they’re here to fight for each and every qualification spot North American gets.
