RNG break Aster's unbeaten run to become champions of the Huya Winter Invitational

Huya Dota2 Winter Invitational came to an end today with the grand final between Royal Never Give Up and Team Aster being the culmination of two weeks of Dota 2 action.

Team Aster had absolutely dominated nearly every aspect of the Huya Winter Invitational, going completely unbeaten during the group stage, before dropping only a single game throughout the playoff stage before the grand final. While RNG dropped into the lower bracket in the first round of playoffs – and lost to Aster during the group stage, they made an amazing run through, not dropping a single game as they looked for some revenge.

Although RNG had played earlier in the day, knocking out Neon Esports in the lower bracket finals, they were definitely not tired when it came to taking on Aster in the grand final – and that was seen from game one. Taking an early lead and causing Aster their second game loss, RNG hoped to also cause them their first series loss and take the championship. What followed was an epic back-and-forth between the two teams. Aster fought back in game two, tying the series before RNG took the third, putting them on championship point. But things were far from over as a quick victory from Aster in game four tied the series and took us to a final and decisive game five.

While Aster held their own in the final game, it was not enough to bring down the RNG lineup that pulled ahead right from the start. Having not dropped a single series throughout the entire event, Aster’s hopes came crashing down as they eventually threw in the towel, giving RNG a 3-2 grand final victory at the Huya Dota2 Winter Invitational.

Having had a rather rough year with a string of third place finishes followed by worse results, this win is a huge positive for RNG. For Aster, although they did not win, this is also a massive result as the year comes to an end and we will surely see a lot from both teams going into 2021.
