8 Games That Need A Visual Novel Spin-Off
A visual novel is a game that has little interaction or combat, focusing on the story and interactions between others. For example, a popular visual novel is Doki Doki Literature Club; you speak with characters and the main mechanic is choosing between predetermined options.
Visual novels are a great way to get to know characters in a series, leaving us wondering, what games deserve a visual novel spin-off? In this list, we are going to answer that. Here, you can find some games that need a visual novel spin-off. Overall, these games have rich stories and environments that can be explored even more with a visual novel.
8/8 Persona Series
The Persona series is incredibly popular and at this point, it’s surprising that the series does not include a visual novel. Imagine a visual novel taking us through the events of Persona 5, without all the exploration and combat. Now, you can focus on conversations with other characters, because let’s face it, after you get your girlfriend to max confidant level, you probably never hang out with her again.
Visual novels of previous games are also a great way to get a grasp of the story without playing them. With a visual novel, you can still explore the city, go to school, and talk to your friends. Like other visual novels, a Persona VN may also have different routes depending on which choices you select.
7/8 Marvel's Midnight Suns
Midnight Suns is a fairly new game, releasing in December of 2022. In this game, you play as the Hunter alongside the group of heroes known as the Midnight Suns. Throughout the game, you can engage in battle, but you can also get to know the heroes around the Abbey.
A visual novel spin-off of Midnight Suns would focus on these relationships, allowing you to make and build friendships. Romantic relationships are not present in Midnight Suns, you could find your hero soulmate and take them on dates.
6/8 Pokemon Series
The Pokemon series is packed with games and spin-offs, but none of them are visual novels. The world of Pokemon is absolutely massive, allowing for plenty of room to have a visual novel.
Due to the size of the world, the visual novel could focus on anything. For example, a spin-off visual novel could focus on school life in Paldea, or even a mystery occurring in a town (Lavender Town visual novel anyone?).
5/8 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has a fantastic story with tons of side content that would be great as a visual novel. There are numerous locations and characters that make an appearance, but don’t really get their chance to shine.
With a visual novel, you can learn about these unknown characters, playing through bits of story that may not be present in the games. Andrzej Sapkowski created a rich world filled with lore; any one of his short stories could be adapted into a visual novel to supplement the games.
4/8 Final Fantasy 14
Final Fantasy 14 is an MMORPG, so it’s no wonder that the game has a lot of content. From the main storyline to small side quests, there is plenty of stuff that could be turned into a visual novel.
A spin-off visual novel could take a step back from the serious story and focus on something more light-hearted. Imagine a visual novel focusing on a little detective Lalafell, similar to Ace Attorney.
3/8 Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 has a complex and mysterious story, as well as a huge city that is bursting full of life. A spin-off visual novel could continue to focus on V, or it could take us to another corner of Night City. The vastness of the city allows for a wide range of focuses in this imaginary visual novel.
A Cyberpunk VN could even borrow from games such as Doki Doki Literature Club or Higurashi: When They Cry, presenting a normal world at first, before it spirals into chaos.
2/8 Nier: Automata
Overall, Nier: Automata is a pretty depressing game. A visual novel spin-off could potentially bring a bit more happiness to the game, showing us a different side of the 2B and 9S.
During the game, the two head to a shopping center, and 9S mentions buying 2B a t-shirt. A visual novel of Nier: Automata could make 9S’s dreams come true, following the two in everyday life, including a section where they shop for t-shirts.
1/8 League Of Legends
Lastly, we have League of Legends. This game truly has endless possibilities when it comes to content for a visual novel. Unlike several of the games on our list, League of Legends isn’t too story-heavy. Sure, there is lore, but you don’t have to play through a rich story.
This leaves a spin-off visual novel open to focus on, well, literally anything. The VN could show us fan-favorite characters like Jinx, as well as take a step back and focus on how the world came to be.
