Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez plays Among Us on Twitch in third biggest stream ever
An American politician has instantly become one of the most popular Twitch stars on the planet, thanks to Pokimane and Among Us.
Ninja and Shroud better look out as there’s a new streamer in town and she’s already logged one of the most successful streams in Twitch history.
Democratic politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, better known simply as AOC, teamed up with more experienced streamers Pokimane and HasanAbi, and quickly notched up 439,000 peak viewers.
That immediately put the stream in amongst the 20 biggest ever, and third if you discount streams from companies like Sony and Riot Games and stick to individuals.
It wasn’t that far off the record for the most successful stream ever, which was made when Ninja played Fortnite with Drake and attracted over 600,000 viewers.
It is, of course, election time in the US, which is the primary reason for the stream, but Ocasio-Cortez has often talked about video games in the past and boasts of having a silver rank in League Of Legends.
She has appeared on Twitch before, most notably during a charity stream by Hbomberguy – where he played Donkey Kong 64 to raise money for transgender charities.
During this week’s stream Ocasio-Cortez repeatedly urged viewers in the US to vote but other than that the only discussion of politics was talking about the NHS with some British streamers.
Ocasio-Cortez’s Twitch channel already has over 500,000 followers and while it’s not clear how often she intends to stream after this she clearly won’t want to waste such a powerful platform.
The Among Us stream seems to have been organised spontaneously, after she sent a tweet on Monday asking if anyone wanted to help her set things up on Twitch.
As well as Pokimane and HasanAbi she also got help from Disguised Toast, DrLupo, and fellow Democratic politician Ilhan Omar.
Apparently Ocasio-Cortez had never played Among Us until she started practicing just before the stream, but in her first live match she still managed to survive until halfway through as an imposter.
Among Us was an obvious choice to play as it’s a party game inspired by Mafia, where you have to deduce who amongst a crew of astronauts is an imposter or not.
Peculiarly, the game was first released in 2018, when it was largely ignored. It only became popular in the last few months after streamers, including Pokimane, picked up on it.
The game is now so popular that plans for a sequel have been cancelled, so that developer InnerSloth can concentrate on improving the original.
