Avatar’s Jennie Kwan Replaces Laura Bailey As Chun-Li In Street Fighter 6
Street Fighter 6 debuted an announcement trailer during this week’s State of Play show. The highly anticipated fighting game showed off its cast of new and returning characters all built on the RE Engine. While the game looks beautiful, it was an audio change that many fans were focused on. It appears that Capcom quietly replaced the voice actress for Chun-Li.
For many of the recent entries in the Street Fighter series, it has been Laura Bailey as the voice behind Chun-Li. She can be heard voicing the character in Street Fighter 4 and 5, as well as Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite. While the announcement trailer for Street Fighter 6 has Chun-Li speaking only a word or two, fans quickly picked up on the subtle change in her voice. Now, the official website for the game confirms that Jennie Kwan is taking over Chun-Li duty from Bailey.
This change-up likely stems from an attempt to give more authenticity to Chun-Li’s character. After all, she is an Asian character so having an Asian voice actress like Jennie Kwan voice her makes sense. Plus, it helps to create a more diverse cast of voices that sounds closer to what we hear in real life. It is a subtle change, but one that can make all the difference to some.
Of course, Laura Bailey is doing just fine without the Street Fighter gig. Having made quite the name for herself in the world of video games, the actress has and continues to voice some of the most popular characters out there. Recently, she received rave reviews, and several trophies, for her turn as Abby in The Last of Us Part II. She was also lauded for her role as Polina Petrova in Call of Duty: Vanguard and can next be heard as Isobel Veloise in The Elder Scrolls Online.
Meanwhile, Kwan is beginning to carve her own path in the world of voice acting. You may recognize her as the voice of Suki in Avatar: The Last Airbender. She also recently lent her talents to Lost Judgement as Sayaka Nishizono and can be heard throughout Demon Slayer and Red Dead Redemption 2.
