Battlefield 2042 Specialists and launch maps revealed by EA

What was previously known only as Battlefield 6 has finally been unveiled, including detailed information on the maps and classes.

After months of speculation, EA and DICE have finally unveiled Battlefield 2042, with the reveal trailer already live and a gameplay one set to premiere on Sunday, during Microsoft’s E3 conference.

There may be additional information released at that point but for now we already know quite a bit about the new maps and the Specialists, 2042’s version of the usual Battlefield classes.

EA has also confirmed that there will be a battle pass for each season of the game, with both free and premium tiers. Importantly, the premium pass will only include cosmetics, so new maps and Specialists will not be gated. Four seasons are planned for the first year, meaning four battle passes and four new Specialists – along with new maps and other new content.

What maps are in Battlefield 2042 at launch?

Seven maps will be available at launch for Battlefield 2042, with more being released as DLC after that.

DICE are promising that not only will the maps be the biggest ever for the series, but they’ll also be the most ‘sandbox-enabling’, which is marketing for speak for you’ll get lots of those little Battlefield moments where you end up shooting down jet fighters while parachuting to the ground or smashing through destructible buildings in a tank.

Here, though, are the official descriptions of the maps, some of which you can already see in the trailer:

Kaleidoscope – set in Sogdo, South Korea. Forces here will clash to control a quantum powered disinformation hub after an attack threatens the global network.
Manifest – set in Brani Island, Singapore. Players will see a strategic flashpoint emerge as global trade chokes this location which is vital for the American supply lines.
Orbital – set in Kourou, French Guiana. The battle here is over a rocket launch site as a controversial space launch becomes a race against time.
Discarded – set in Alang, India. Here you see shipbreakers facing tidal extremes as factions fight to secure rogue nuclear assets.
Renewal – set in the Eastern Desert, Egypt. Players will fight for a groundbreaking agriculture technology centre in the Egyptian Desert.
Hourglass – set in Doha, Qatar – Shifting sands and a lost shipping convoy tear a city centre apart.
Breakaway – set in Queen Maud Land, Antarctica. Struggle over oil and gas that pushes soldiers to the brink as an industry clashes with nature and ice gives way.

What are the Specialist classes in Battlefield 2042?

Rather than the usual Battlefield classes the new game will have ‘Specialists’, who have their own unique traits and customisable loadouts.

There will be 10 Specialists in Battlefield 2042, but only four of them have been unveiled so far. These ones are inspired by the traditional Battlefield classes, so you’ll have to wait a little longer to see how much the others deviate from the norm.
