Borderlands 3 Is Going Next-Gen (With Free Upgrades From PS4 And Xbox One)
Unlike the rest of the world, Borderlands 3 has had a very good year. The venerable “shlooter” has continued to sell like hotcakes, and the game’s seen several beefy expansions since release. And today, during PAX Online, Gearbox revealed that the good times are going to keep rolling right into the next generation of consoles.
That’s right, folks – Borderlands 3 is coming to Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.
The next-gen spruce-ups will come with all the bells and whistles you’d expect – 60 FPS, 4K support, so on, so forth. But what’s really impressive here is the stuff these ports are bringing to local multiplayer, which definitely took us by surprise. First off, the 60 FPS applies to local co-op, meaning that the gnarly split-screen chug in the initial release is finally being dealt with. On top of that, split-screen will now support up to 4 players, and two-player split-screen will be able to use vertical or horizontal screen splits.
Best part? It’s all free if you went in on Borderlands 3 this gen. These next-gen ports won’t cost a cent for those early adopters, with PS4 players getting the PlayStation 5 version and One players nabbing the Series X port with no upcharge. Better yet, you’ll be able to transfer your save data from the previous releases. It’s not exactly clear how this upgrade system will work, but we expect more details down the line.
One thing is clear, though. After a long break, Borderlands is finally back in the public zeitgeist, and if this news is anything to go by, Gearbox probably won’t let up on it for some time to come.
