Classic GTA Trilogy Returns But Only For Definitive Edition Owners
Last month, Rockstar apologized for the state in which GTA Trilogy – Definitive Edition launched. The game was not only riddled with bugs and glitches, but the graphical overhaul looked anything but "Definitive". As part of the plan to make it up to those who bought the trilogy, the developer announced that the original trilogy will be brought back for those who bought the Definitive Edition on PC.
As of today, the classic versions of GTA 3, GTA: Vice City, and GTA: San Andreas are back on the Rockstar launcher for PC users. The classic editions will reappear on the launcher if you previously owned them, or if you purchased the Definitive Edition. This will apply to all Definitive Edition purchases made on PC till July 1, 2022 via the Rockstar Store only.
"Everyone who purchased the PC version of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition from the Rockstar Store has now been delivered the classic versions of GTAIII, Vice City, and San Andreas in their Rockstar Games Launcher library at no additional cost," said a tweet by Rockstar. The devs have also released a list of FAQ, in case you're not clear on the offer.
After receiving backlash for the quality of the Definitive Edition, Rockstar put out a statement saying, "Firstly, we want to sincerely apologize to everyone who has encountered issues playing these games. The Grand Theft Auto series — and the games that make up this iconic trilogy — are as special to us as we know they are to fans around the world. The updated versions of these classic games did not launch in a state that meets our own standards of quality, or the standards our fans have come to expect."
What followed was a number of updates to fix the numerous bugs and improve the visuals. The first update came only a day after the apology, but failed to fix some of the bugs mentioned in the patch notes. Consequent updates have vastly improved the trilogy, addressing major issues like the blinding rain, the missing clouds over San Andreas, and various character models.
