Cyberpunk 2077 Will Only Get One Expansion, But CDPR Hints At A Full Sequel

Phantom Liberty will be the first and last story expansion coming to Cyberpunk 2077, but CD Projekt Red isn't finished with the series yet. Speaking to investors, CDPR CEO Adam Kiciński confirmed that the company "definitely intend[s]" to develop Cyberpunk further, and is focussing on building up its brand recognition.

While Kiciński's statement does confirm that there won't be another Cyberpunk DLC after Phantom Liberty, it does suggest that CDPR is already making plans for a full sequel. This is also backed up by Kiciński's reveal that Phantom Liberty will be CDPR's last project using the developer's in-house REDengine, confirming that future entries in the series will be made using Unreal software.

During a Q&A with investors, Kiciński was asked if a second expansion was possible should Phantom Liberty be a success. The CEO shot the idea down, but made it clear the company is still interested in the series.

"We decided to release one large expansion using the potential of the new generation of consoles", Kiciński said. "At the same time, I would like to emphasize that we want to further develop Cyberpunk's IP. We have invested a lot of time and effort to build this brand and we definitely intend to develop it further."

Part of CDPR's plan to expand the Cyberpunk universe is through television, with the anime series Cyberpunk Edgerunners set to hit Netflix next Tuesday. However, according to the CDPR boss, the primary purpose of the anime is to boost the Cyberpunk brand.

"We treat Cyberpunk Edgerunners as an investment in the popularity of Cyberpunk's IP", Kiciński explained. "We believe that Edgerunners encourage [sic] viewers to get to know the game."

With that in mind, more game content is likely on the horizon, with Edgerunners acting as a way to retain player interest during the quiet period. However, given the long wait between The Witcher games – and the lengthy development of Cyberpunk 2077 itself – we're not likely to hear anything about this for some time. Especially with a fourth Witcher game currently in development too.
