Darkest Dungeon 2 early access starts in 2021 with new 3D visuals

The sequel to much loved Lovecraftian roguelike Darkest Dungeon will enter early access next year with significantly upgraded graphics.

Red Hook Studios has announced that Darkest Dungeon 2 will enter early access next year as an Epic Games Store exclusive, four years after the original game was released.

The sequel was announced over a year ago now but there’s still not much information on it. Although according to a new blog entry it will feature ‘a refined combat system and a whole new metagame’, as well as being ‘packed with fresh monsters, bosses, and challenges’.

It will also utilise a brand-new 3D graphics engine and while the trailer below is not in-game footage, the character models and rendering techniques are apparently taken from the game itself.

Unlike other games that only pay lip service to Lovecraftian horror, Darkest Dungeon used the threat of encroaching madness as an ever-present danger, with heroes that survived a dungeon often left mentally scarred by the experience.

The 2D artwork, reminiscent of Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, was also a large part of the appeal but it seems to have been adapted into 3D very well. Although we would expect that the gameplay will remain purely 2D.

The original game was released first on PC and then slowly slithered its way onto other formats, and it seems as if the sequel is taking that same approach.

The first game is currently available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS Vita, and iOS and we’d highly recommend it on any format. In fact, if you haven’t played it before, it’d be the perfect thing to play over Halloween.

Or if you can’t be having with all these modern video games there’s also a board game version of the original game planned, which managed to hit its Kickstarter goal within just 35 minutes.

In fact, it’s currently made over $1 million more than originally aimed for, which gives an indication of just how popular the franchise is.
