Days Gone beats Mortal Kombat 11 for UK number one

The multiformat Mortal Kombat has lost its prize fight with PS4 exclusive Days Gone, which sold only 27% less than God Of War last year.

Despite mixed reviews, and being exclusive to PlayStation 4, Days Gone was the best-selling game of last week. And it wasn’t even just the individual formats chart (which aren’t out yet) that it came top of, but the all formats chart as well.

Sales of Days Gone are 27% lower than last year’s God Of War, which was released on almost the same date, but then Days Gone’s pre-release hype has been considerably less positive and it’s a brand new IP – which makes the sales all the more impressive. Especially as it’s reported by to be ‘comfortably’ ahead of Mortal Kombat 11.

Mortal Kombat is never as popular elsewhere in the world as it is in America, but its failure to beat Days Gone is still surprising given it’s on multiple formats. The PlayStation 4 accounted for 71% of sales, although the retail release of the Nintendo Switch version has been delayed for two weeks.

Its retail sales are down 43.6% on 2015’s Mortal Kombat X but slightly up on the same developer’s Injustice 2 from 2017. Factoring in the rise in digital sales and that drop over the last Mortal Kombat is likely to have been relatively mild compared to many other franchise sequels of the last few years.

There were no other significant new releases last week, with the other notable chart movement limited to the 70% drop for World War Z in its second week. Although the game has still performed well above expectation.

Meanwhile, Metro Exodus saw a 130% increase in sales, thanks to widespread shop discounts.

There are no major retail releases this week, or at all until Rage 2 on May 14. So if Days Gone can maintain its current lead over Mortal Kombat 11 that could give it at least three weeks at the top.
