Diablo 4 Blog Post Reveals New Info On Skill System, Legendaries, And More
Blizzard is heating up with Diablo 4’s September update, which explores a new skill system and changes to Legendary Items and Enchantment Systems. Game director Luis Barriga and lead systems designer David Kim addressed the feedback they had received from fans – regarding Power and the need for a more in-depth skill system – that may just turn a demon’s frown upside down.
Barriga thanked fans for their words of encouragement and positivity towards Diablo 4’s art, cinematics and Sanctuary’s brand-new open world gameplay – a feature that was announced in the last quarterly update. Barriga confirmed that the team had also combed through constructive feedback from the community regarding itemization, which will be updated later this year.

Handing over to Kim – who provided a thorough look at Diablo 4’s development roadmap – revealed our first look at the new skill system, including a pre-alpha mockup of the skill tree reminiscent of something you’re likely to see in Sleepy Hollow. Kim echoed the call from the community to provide a Talent system with more depth, and expand the system’s progression that felt too basic. Diablo 4’s new Sorceress skill tree contains a new network of skill upgrades and passive effects, incorporated into the branches and roots of the tree.
Legendary Items was another hot topic worthy of Hell itself, where Kim confirmed that “big changes” would return player’s power to the character, instead of gaining a large chunk of that power from equipped items. These modifications were designed to make every itemization choice feel “meaningful”, that would ultimately find the right balance with build choices. Kim also flagged core itemization to point out a few tweaks. He stated that itemization would be discussed in the next blog regarding the best way to emphasize item quality distinction.
The Sorceress Enchantment System was introduced as a way of exploring new class mechanics that would be unique to Diablo 4, and benefit the player who experiments with different builds or classes. Kim also confirmed Blizzard’s work on developing a Druid-specific class mechanic that would be shared in the future.
Kim concluded the blog with news of an improved end game character progression system. The changes aim to provide Diablo 4 with a stronger replayability factor to test the skills of veteran Diablo players who look on Ashava the Pestilent as more of a pet. An update on that system is expected early next year, however Blizzard also noted fan’s request for ‘cooler’ fantasy pertaining to Ancestral, Demonic and Angelic Power, which has been given the nod of approval by the team.
