Dominic Cummings Barnard Castle driving game now available on PS4

Political satire has now become a part of game creator Dreams, with a new driving game that recreates the weekend’s strangest news story.

Given that even a low budget video game takes several years to complete they don’t tend to feature anything in the way of topical satire. And even if they could they wouldn’t, because publishers don’t like upsetting potential customers.

But Dreams for the PlayStation 4 is different, as it allows anyone to create a game with whatever they want in it. And as 30 Miles To Barnard Castle proves, it takes mere hours to make something worthwhile.

The listing for 30 Miles To Bernard Castle is here but you’ll need a copy of the game in order to actually play it. Although you can see a quick run-through in the Twitter video below.

This ‘test’ was conducted with his wife (who, like him, was suspected of having the coronavirus) and child in the car. All of which he later refused to apologise for and said he had no regrets over.

The description of the game reads as follows: ‘Dominic needs to get back to work. But his eyes have went all weird. Best drive to Barnard Castle with his kid just to make sure its [sic] safe to drive to London’.

As you can see from the footage, the game involves avoiding oncoming traffic while putting up with blurry vision, loud coughing, and a nagging child.

It’s not much of game but for something that was put together in less than a day, and is genuinely funny, it’s quite the achievement.

Could Dreams open up a new era of topical gaming parodies? We’ll have to wait and see, but as an outlet for ordinary people’s frustrations, and a means to highlight the hypocrisy of modern politics, it clearly has a lot of potential.
