Dragon’s Dogma Netflix anime trailer looks surprisingly good
The latest dead franchise to get a Netflix series is Capcom’s 2012 action role-player Dragon’s Dogma, but… why?
There seems to be one simple rule for what games are turned into TV shows on Netflix: the fact that they haven’t had a new game out in at least five years.
It’s a peculiar rule but it holds up for everything from Castlevania to The Witcher and explains why those rumours about a Legend Of Zelda series never came to anything.
But for whatever reason Dragon’s Dogma is the latest to get an animated show and it looks pretty good, with animation by Japanese studio Sublimation and a plot that seems pretty true to the original game.
Whether many people can remember the plot of the original game is open to question (it involved a dragon stealing the protagonist’s heart – and not in a romantic way) but you’ll probably recall the pawn characters that acted as computer-controlled companions and they’re in the anime too.
If you’re interested, the show starts on 17 September and if it’s successful it could easily lead to multiple seasons even if there’s no word of a new game, which is what’s happened with Castlevania.
It does seem likely that Capcom is building up to some kind of sequel though as the game was re-released on Switch last year, which was assumed at the time to be a prelude to a new announcement.
Nothing ever happened though, so either Capcom were disappointed by the game’s reception or they’re just biding their time.
They don’t have that much on their plate at the moment, beyond Resident Evil Village and the mysterious Pragmata in 2022, so an announcement later this year wouldn’t be too much of a surprise.
