Fortnite update 10.40 patch notes: Samsung glow skin, Matchmaking, downtime news

Fortnite update 10.40 is fast approaching after Epic Games officially announced the games next big release along with details of server downtime coming to the game late last night.

We'd have spotted it, but we were too busy staring lovingly into Joel's eye's in the new trailer for The Last of Us Part 2.

Anyway, the new v10.40 update arrives today, with server maintenance planned to begin at 4 AM ET (0800 UTC). For anyone terrible with timezones, that's 9am BST UK time.

As per the usual, the full 10.40 patch notes won't be available until after the update goes live. That said, Epic Games has made a spectacular job of announcing some of the big changes coming to the game, earlier this week.

For instance, one of the big new changes revolves around changes to matchmaking, and the eventual addition of Ai bots to the game in Season 11.

According to Epic Games, the new matchmaking update will create fairer matches.

"Since Battle Royale launched, the matchmaking strategy for our core modes has remained mostly unchanged," reads an Epic blog post.

"Over the past two years, however, the range of player skill has grown considerably. In Arena, we use Hype-based matchmaking to ensure players are matched evenly across platforms.

"In the v10.40 update, we’re introducing improved matchmaking logic to Battle Royale core modes to create fairer matches. What does this mean? You will be more likely to match with players of similar skill, and as you get better, so should your opponents."

If that wasn't enough of a big change, there's also some significant tweaks to the games aim assist and controller sensitivity, which were also detailed in a separate blog by Epic Games on Thursday.

"Our upcoming v10.40 update improves Aim Assist and Sensitivity settings for controllers and adds The Combine to test your skill!" Epic explains.

This new Combine playlist will let players test the sensitivity changes by completing the challenges in the fastest possible time.

"Here your goal is to reach the end as fast as possible while eliminating all targets along the way," Epic adds. "Practice with and fine-tune your settings, warm up your aim before a match, or compete for the fastest time on the leaderboard with friends or other players.

"Each leaderboard provides options to sort times by your preferred input device, whether that be keyboard and mouse, controller, or touch. Share your top times with us on our social channels using the #FortniteCombine hashtag! Will you be the fastest?"

Whilst that might seem like all the big changes, there's also another extra special skin set being planned.

Several dataminers late Tuesday night unearthed a new skin called Glow. It appears to be a new Samsung phone exclusive which can even be gifted to friends if you don't want it.

According to FNLeaksAndInfo, The Glow Skin Releases On The 27th (September).

You can take a closer look at the new skin, just above.

As pointed out previously there should also be some extensive bug fixes coming to the game, many of which have already been details on the Fortnite Trello board.

This includes:

• Several cosmetics and pickaxe effects are not rendering properly
• Missing texture on tires in Port-a-Fort
• Some "My Island" menu settings apply default value in game after being changed
• Siphon effect missing in Creative games after being queued for Playgrounds
• Higher ping and latency in Creative Mode
• Flag Not Dropping in CTF

Stay tuned for more info later today.
