Modders Bring VR Support To Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

The modder going by the name of DrBreef recently released a trailer for an upcoming VR port of the perennially popular Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. The project is apparently still a long ways away from completion, but the progress being made is already impressive.

The news comes by way of the community known as Flat2VR which revealed a nearly minute long preview of the gameplay in Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy running on the Meta Quest 2. This includes a really good look at the famous Hoth level and some great lightsaber combat.

DrBreef is currently porting the game to VR along with two other modders, BeggyG and Bummser. The group collectively makes up Team Beef, established back in 2019. “At the time, DrBeef already had some ports under his belt, but started work on the first Oculus Quest port of Half-Life,” Team Beef explains on Patreon. “Fast forward three years and native Oculus Quest ports of the following games have been released and downloaded literally millions of times and still average around 370,000 downloads a year.” The website lists a number of different games including Quake and Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

“The team is comprised of DrBeef, BaggyG, and Bummser and has not stopped developing yet,” the group remarks. “More recently, they have tackled Unity ports and are currently working on future ports of Wrath: Aeon of Ruin, Bendy and the Ink Machine, Star Wars Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast, and Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy.”

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy is a shooter developed by Raven Software back in 2003. The story takes place two years after Star Wars Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast and follows Jaden Korr, a student at the eponymous Jedi Academy under the supervision of Luke Skywalker and Kyle Katarn. Players are tasked with investigating a group of Dark Jedi called the Disciples of Ragnos. They get to pick their path, remaining on the Light Side or switching over the Dark Side of the Force.

“Forge your weapon and follow the path of the Jedi,” the official description reads. “Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy is the latest installment of the highly acclaimed Jedi Knight series. Take on the role of a new student eager to learn the ways of the Force from Jedi Master Luke Skywalker.”
