Overwatch pro player Geguri leaves the Shanghai Dragons

The Overwatch League is currently in its off-season, which means that professional teams are shuffling up their rosters. Among these releases and re-signings comes the announcement that Se-yeon “Geguri” Kim is leaving the Shanghai Dragons.

Kim is a famous tank player, best known for being the first female pro in the Overwatch League. When she was 17, she was accused of aimbotting due to her stellar performance on the hero Zarya. Geguri gave a live performance of her skills, and was cleared by Blizzard of any charges. She was signed by the Shanghai Dragons in 2018 after playing in the South Korean APEX scene.

South Korean feminist groups used Geguri as a symbol for a brief time, but later dropped her name and image from their marketing and social media at Geguri’s request. She was also named as a “Next Generation Leader” by TIME Magazine in 2019.

Despite being such a prominent face on the Dragons, Geguri hasn’t seen much stage time recently. However, she intends to continue with her Overwatch career, and it’ll be interesting to see where she lands in season 4 of the Overwatch League, which is due to start in 2021.
