Pac-Man Chomps Into A Battle Royale In Mega Tunnel Battle
Classic Pac-Man action is entering the battle royale fray on Stadia in a brand new game. The iconic ghost-chomper is celebrating his 40th anniversary this year. Bandai Namco unveiled a few new projects over the year for fans of the arcade title. One of these projects is Pac-Man Geo, a mobile title enabling users to play in mazes based in real locations like New York and Tokyo.
In 1980, Namco released Pac-Man in arcades. Many have fond memories of spending their hard-earned coins trying to get a good score. It’s no surprise Pac-Man’s simplistic, addictive gameplay continues to be revisited in new ways. Back then, there was Ms. Pac-Man, spicing things up with new maze layouts. In the modern-day, the classic gameplay was revitalized in Pac-Man Championship Edition and its sequels. There was also the four-player Pac-Man Battle Royale. Back in May, Amazon unveiled Pac-Man Live Studio for Twitch, but mysteriously there have been no updates on its release. The latest take on classic Pac-Man gameplay will be battle royale-based, but this time on a grand scale.
Today, Bandai Namco announced Pac-Man Mega Tunnel Battle, a battle royale game coming to Stadia in November. The title takes the classic arcade gameplay and gives it a competitive boost with 64 players battling across interconnected mazes to be the last Pac standing. Check out the announcement trailer below. A free demo is currently available until October 27.
According to the trailer, the game is coming “first on Stadia,” implying it will arrive elsewhere in the future. It may be tempting to think Pac-Man Mega Tunnel Battle is identical to Super Mario Bros. 35 and Tetris 99 after watching the trailer, but it’s not exactly like those. Yes, you do begin in your own maze. However, you are not only contained to your maze. You can go into other players’ mazes, and kill them yourself after eating a Power Pellet. In addition to the Elimination mode, there is a Spectator mode allowing viewers to vote on power-ups.
After spending some time in the demo, I am confident in saying the game is a perfect melding of classic Pac-Man and the online battle royale genre. The gameplay is incredibly fun and fast-paced. There are different things to consider in a match, such as your lives, power-ups, and when gates to other mazes open. Since you can hunt other players down, this leads to trying to anticipate where your opponent is going to turn. Of course, there’s also the constant danger of Ghosts, making matches brisk. Given core Pac-Man gameplay is easy to jump into, Pac-Man Mega Tunnel Battle could position itself as one of the most welcoming battle royale games in the market.
Pac-Man Mega Tunnel Battle is expected to arrive on Stadia on November 17. It’s available for pre-order on the Stadia store for $19.99. The demo lasts until October 27, so be sure to give it a try before then.
