PlayStation is official sponsor of Evo 2019, hints at game announcements

The world’s biggest fighting game tournament has a new sponsor and it looks like they’re going to use the event to announce some news.

Evo 2019 is just a few weeks away now, but it’s suddenly been revealed that PlayStation will be the sponsor for eight of its nine games.

It’s not hard to guess which is the odd one out from the list below (hint: it’s the Nintendo game), but that’s an unusually high level of involvement for Sony.

Evo 2019 games line-up

Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition
Tekken 7
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Samurai Shodown
BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle
Mortal Kombat 11
Dragon Ball FighterZ
Soulcalibur VI
Under Night In-Birth

Evo 2019 will take place from the 2nd to the 4th of August in Las Vegas. Previous events have been used to announce fighting game news, although usually only new characters or extras rather than entirely new games.

But the degree of Sony’s involvement this year may suggest something more significant, with fans already speculating on everything from Street Fighter VI to PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale 2.

Neither of those are very likely, but Street Fighter V has been a PlayStation console exclusive all generation, so something related to that is certainly possible.

There have also been rumours that Capcom is planning to try again with a new Marvel Vs. Capcom game, and since Sony already get on well with both parties that doesn’t seem entirely unlikely.

Just don’t blame us when it turns out to be a new controller or something.
