PUBG spin-off The Callisto Protocol no longer a PUBG spin-off
The Callisto Protocol remains on track for 2022, but it has now severed any ties it had to Krafton’s PUBG battle royale.
Back before EA announced its Dead Space remake, fans of the series had The Callisto Protocol to look forward to instead. A spiritual successor to the sci-fi horror series, by one of the original creators, the game was announced almost two years ago and yet still there’s been zero gameplay footage.
Despite the lack of info, it is still slated to release this year, with no sign of a delay. However, one detail has changed since its announcement. Namely, its connection to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
For whatever reason, The Callisto Protocol was going to be set in the same universe as the battle royale, but creative director Glen Schofield has said this is no longer the case.
Schofield shared the news via Twitter, simply saying that The Callisto Protocol ‘grew into its own world’ and is now completely unrelated to PUBG.
We’re still not entirely sure why it was ever connected to PUBG to begin with but, even before the change, any ties the two had would’ve been tenuous at best.
The game is also describes as an AAAA title, whatever that means. It’s kind of hard to buy such a description when, again, we haven’t seen any gameplay or been given an explanation of what AAAA game is supposed to mean.
This compares to the Dead Space remake, which was announced six months after The Callisto Protocol and has already had several behind the scenes videos to demonstrate how it will play.
The Callisto Protocol releases in 2022 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
