Rainbow Six Siege coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X, will feature cross-play
Rainbow Six Siege’s success has guaranteed it a new home on next gen consoles, and it will feature cross-play too.
With Rainbow Six Siege being considered one of the best first person shooter titles of the current generation, it’s not at all surprising that developer and publisher Ubisoft would want to keep its success going for as long as possible.
Ubisoft had already confirmed that Siege would be coming to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, but now director Leroy Athanassof has stated that it will release shortly after the consoles’ launches.
In an interview with Windows Central, Athanassof explained that the plan is to have Siege release in the latter half of 2020, following the debut of the new consoles.
He was unable to provide a specific date, saying that that’s dependent on when the consoles actually come out.
‘Why I can’t give you a date is because those dates are, in the end, on the people doing the next gen consoles,’ he said.
‘What I can tell you is that we are going to be on [the consoles] from launch. When they will release the consoles; but it’s up to them to agree that. For Siege, our target is to be available right at launch.’
What’s more exciting, though, is that the game will feature cross-play, allowing PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners to continue playing with their next gen opponents without needing to risk breaking the bank for a new console.
‘We don’t want to break our community,’ said Athanassof, ‘So, we want people who buy the new system right away to play it with their friends.’
As for cross-platform play, that’s still a work-in-progress and Athanassof added that it’s really up to Sony and Microsoft to work out.
‘This is more a discussion between Microsoft and Sony. We would love to be fully cross-play – have Xbox players matchmaking against the PlayStation players. We are ready to support that. And hopefully, this will happen because as I said, it’s a general move in the industry, and there is nothing that can prevent that. It’s just a matter of time before it happens.’
Unfortunately, this doesn’t include PC players, with Athanassof simply saying ‘I don’t think there will ever be console cross-play with PC.’
As of now, Ubisoft hasn’t specified how Siege will be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Is it just a straight port of the game or a fully-fledged remaster?
Given the use of the word ‘launch,’ it’s probably safe to assume that it’s at least a separate release and isn’t simply taking advantage of the consoles’ reported backwards compatibility
This isn’t the only uncertainty surrounding the next gen consoles. The recently released Dreams on PlayStation 4 is already being considered for the PlayStation 5, with director Mark Healy saying that it’s something being considered and most likely will happen should Dreams be a success.
Presumably the same is also true for other Sony exclusives this year, such as The Last Of Us Part 2 and Ghost Of Tsushima, not to mention most other major third party releases this year and next.
The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are planned to release before this Christmas.
