River City Girls 2 Announced By WayForward, Coming In 2022

WayForward has announced that it is working on River City Girls 2, a sequel to the original game that launched in 2019.

WayForward had quite a strong showing at the Limited Runs E3 stream earlier today, showing off a number of titles that will be receiving physical editions. One of the highlights of the show is the announcement of River City Girls 2, a sequel to the original game that will be launching at some point in 2022. Although we don’t have a concrete release date yet, we do know that the game will launch for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch.

Although we only got a very brief glimpse of some promotional art, this hasn’t stopped fans from speculating about what the game could be about. From what we can gather from the art, it looks like River City Girls 2 will have two new main characters, one of which looks very similar to River City Girls’ version of Marian from the Double Dragon series. The news of a sequel was first teased during a different Limited Run stream in 2020.

But that wasn’t the only River City Girls-related announcement WayForward had in store for fans. Also announced was the localization of River City Girls Zero which released on the Super Famicom exclusively in Japan. A release date wasn’t announced but the game will be coming to Nintendo Switch at some point this year.

And if that wasn’t enough, WayForward also announced that the first River City Girls is getting a PS5 release for those of you who haven’t played the original. All of the games here will be getting physical versions thanks to Limited Run Games, although be aware they are likely to be in very limited quantities, so keep an eye out for when they’re on sale.

For those that haven’t played the first River City Girls, you play as either Kyoko or Misako, two high-school girls whose main goal is to look for their missing boyfriends. The game is an old-school beat-em-up similar to more modern releases like Scott Pilgrim and the most recent Battletoads. If you’d like to learn more about the game, you can read our review here.
