Skyrim TikTok Video Perfectly Captures How Stupid NPCs Are In Dungeons
Skyrim does a lot of things right, but AI in dungeons is not one of them. Look no further than this hilarious TikTok video of poor Derkeethus for proof, who blindly shambles past two traps before meeting his untimely demise.
“Let’s tread softly,” whispered the Argonian. The player – knowing how to navigate dungeons better than the NPC – doesn’t listen. Instead, they sprint through the dungeon, expertly dodging the hidden spike traps and flamethrowers. After successfully reaching the next room, they turn around to watch Derkeethus.
He starts strong enough by following the player’s lead and sprinting through the traps. An overhead trap door misses him, and he almost gets away from the flamethrowers unscathed. However, as he approaches the main character he slows down his pace, leaving him vulnerable to one final attack. Check out the hilarious video below:
Derkeethus is one of the many followers you can unlock in Skyrim. When you first find them, they’re trapped in Darkwater Pass. After a quick escape, they’re more than willing to follow you throughout the rest of your journey. Of course, as is the case with all followers, you’ll need to keep a close eye on them. Skyrim’s companions aren’t the brightest folks in Tamriel and have a tendency to get lost, get stuck, or walk blindly into traps.
The creator of the above video has several others, almost all of them focused on poor AI in video games. Some are from Skyrim – like this one of a Fire Mage fighting a horse – but many others look at different games, including The Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout.
Skyrim has seen something of a resurgence lately, thanks to its addition to Xbox Game Pass. Both returning and new players are diving into the snowy locale, bringing the old title back into the spotlight. Its AI might leave something to be desired, but the blockheaded NPCs are just part of the iconic game’s charm.
