Sony patent shows PlayStation 5 devkit – or maybe even the console itself
Diagrams of a peculiar-looking piece of Sony hardware have appeared online and are probably of the devkit used to make new PS5 games.
There is a small chance that what you’re looking at here is the design for the PlayStation 5, but considering how hilariously ugly and overdesigned it is we don’t think that’s likely.
More probably it’s the PlayStation 5 dev kit (development kit), which is the specially modified version of the console used by developers to create games on.
Why it needs such huge fans on the side is a mystery, but there is a chance that it’s nothing to do with PlayStation 5 at all – since the patent simply doesn’t say.
The illustrations were discovered by Dutch website LetsGoDigital, who are similarly unable to tell exactly what it is.
The V-shaped indent could be construed as the Roman numeral for five though, which brings to mind the devkit for the original Xbox which was just a big ‘X’.
While various unconfirmed reports have suggested that PlayStation 5 developers have had devkits since early last year it’s almost guaranteed they have them by now, or they wouldn’t be able to get games ready for the console’s launch next year.
But if it is a devkit the design doesn’t necessarily mean the consumer version of the PlayStation 5 will look in anyway similar. Or at least we hope not.
