The biggest selling video game of 2019 in the UK is… GTA V
The number one selling game of 2019 first came out six years ago, as Days Gone is named the best-selling new IP of the year so far.
2019 doesn’t have the makings of a classic year in terms of video games, but there has been plenty of excellent AAA games ranging from Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice to Resident Evil 2 and Total War: Three Kingdoms.
But none of those have sold anywhere near as much as Grand Theft Auto V, the original version of which came out in 2013 and the current gen versions a year later.
Since the biggest name games usually only come out nearer Christmas it’s not unusual for a game released the previous year to still be number one by the halfway point, but GTA V is obviously much older than that.
According to the Entertainment Retail Association (ERA) UK game sales totalled £1.56 billion in the first half of 2019, accounting for 47% of all entertainment spending – including music and video.
Overall spending only rose by 1% though, as while digital sales were up 2.4% to £1.38 billion, physical sales were down 8.5% to just £184.9 million.
The bi-annual ERA report is one of the only times we ever get to see actual sales numbers for games in the UK and it reveals that in terms of unit sales video games are significantly behind the most popular videos – the fact that games are much more expensive inflating their revenue figures.
As such, movie Bohemian Rhapsody was the biggest selling entertainment release of the year with 1,454,671 units sold, with GTA V’s total of 361,312 putting it between The Greatest Showman and Aquaman on the video top 10.
The Greatest Showman soundtrack also beat GTA V in terms of album sales, while the best-selling single was Someone You Loved by Lewis Capaldi on 1,342,103.
The best-selling video game released this year has been Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 at number three, on 263,520 sales, followed by Resident Evil 2 on 239,495.
There are actually two new IPs in the top 10 though, with Days Gone at number six with 229,182 sales and the infamous Anthem at number nine with 165,746.
