The Game Awards 2021 Gets Biggest Audience Yet
The Game Awards are held in Los Angeles, with the glitzy ceremony awarding video game titles coveted accolades every year. The annual awards ceremony is a chance for the industry to enjoy a little glamour and for developers to bask in the glow of recognition if their title receives an award.
This year's Game Awards was the biggest ever, according to the organiser. Geoff Keighley, the host and producer of the awards ceremony, has announced viewing figures for 2021's show, which concluded earlier this month.
Keighley announced that this year's ceremony delivered 85 million livestreams, which is The Game Awards' biggest audience to date. This is up from the 83 million the show saw last year, when the ceremony was conducted over a virtual event owing to the pandemic. It is a big jump from 2019 and 2018, when The Game Awards delivered 45 million and 26 million livestreams, respectively.
The Game Awards has been around since 2014, and over the course of seven years the awards, which are given for "outstanding achievements in the video game industry," have become a major event. This year's show also generated a record number of tweets, a record number of viewer votes, and the highest watch time on YouTube to date.
The ceremony generates hype as celebrities and leading industry figures are announced as guest presenters. There are musical performances to look forward to, while the awards generate much online discussion. The shortlist for the much-coveted accolade of Game of the Year inspires much discussion here at TheGamer. The 2021 Game Awards saw our editor-in-chief Stacey Henley in attendance at the Microsoft Theater in L.A., where the ceremony was held, and with performers such as Sting and Imagine Dragons taking the stage.
This year's awards saw the indie title It Takes Two become Game of the Year. The innovative co-op platformer beat out the likes of Deathloop, Metroid Dread, Psychonauts 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Resident Evil Village to take the crown. Over the course of the ceremony, there were multiple game announcements too.
