The Team Behind Super Mario Odyssey May Be Working On A New Donkey Kong Game

Donkey Kong is turning 40 years old this year. In celebration of his anniversary, there are rumors of a new Donkey Kong game in the works, created by the same team that brought us Super Mario Odyssey.

It’s been a while since we have gotten a new Donkey Kong game. Back in 2015, Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars released, but this was the last time we saw the giant ape in a starring role. This game was a spin-off title, so Donkey Kong wasn’t even the main feature. Although Nintendo originally creating Donkey Kong, recent titles have been developed by Retro Studios. The studio brought us the Donkey Kong Country series, as well as Metroid Prime. Currently, Retro Studios is working on Metroid Prime 4, so the reins will be passed back to Nintendo for any near future Donkey Kong games.

YouTuber LonelyGoomba recently took to Twitter to share the news of a potential Donkey Kong game. Other sources, including Nintendo Life and Zippo, mention a 2D game as well. Regardless of appearance, it seems that Nintendo is indeed working on a new game. The team behind the game is Nintendo EPD, who previously worked on Super Mario Odyssey. EPD is Nintendo’s planning and development team. It is the internal developer responsible for popular games such as Splatoon and The Legend of Zelda.

In the past, Nintendo has celebrated anniversaries with new games and events. In 2020, Mario celebrated its 35th anniversary with a battle-royale style game on Nintendo Switch, and collaboration events with other Nintendo games, such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Because of this, it’s very likely that Donkey Kong will get his own celebration.

It’s not that far-fetched that creators of Super Mario Odyssey are working on a new Donkey Kong game either. The most recent addition to the Mario series is filled with Donkey Kong Easter Eggs. Some are hard to find, but others blatantly obvious. There is a city named after Donkey Kong (New Donk City), and it’s packed with shops and street name references.

E3 is just a month away, and we can look forward to a potential Donkey Kong announcement. Stay tuned to news from TheGamer about E3, starting on June 12. Square Enix, Bandai Namco, and Sega will make an appearance at the event as well.
