VALORANT Devs Trying to “Accelerate” the Release of Next Few Maps
VALORANT game director Joe Ziegler has teased the next couple maps to enter the game’s competitive rotation. In a conversation with professional VALORANT player Oscar “mixwell” Cañellas, Ziegler stated that the game’s development team is trying to “accelerate” the release of the next few maps. Now standing at five maps available for competitive play, the team wants to reach seven to widen the game’s strategic field.
Mixwell, a former professional CS:GO player now competing in VALORANT for G2 Esports, sat down with game director Joe Ziegler to discuss Riot Games’ first-person shooter. 18 minutes into the video, Mixwell questions how many maps the VALORANT development team plans to have in the competitive playlist. Icebox, VALORANT’s newest map addition, brings the game up to five maps available in competitive matchmaking.
Ziegler is quick to admit that the game does not have enough maps. “We don’t have enough right now, we’ll be the first to admit it,” the game director says. Ziegler explains that five total maps gives them enough to “run a [best-of-five],” but that the team still wishes to add more maps in the near future. “We’re trying to accelerate the next few maps, because we feel like getting to seven is a good starting point.”
According to Ziegler, reaching seven or more maps would allow the VALORANT team to pick and choose which maps could stay in the competitive map pool. “And then, once we get past that,” Ziegler adds, “we can begin really thinking if we’re gonna leave maps out of the competitive map pool.” An official competitive map pool would also allow Riot Games to rotate certain maps in and out, with maps potentially undergoing revisions once removed from the pool.
VALORANT introduced newest map Icebox at the start of Episode I, Act III, and later added it to the competitive playlist in patch 1.11. Per Riot Games’ competitive rules, the map is ineligible to play at official competitive VALORANT events for the next few weeks. The map will enter the competitive rotation in time for the First Strike regional finals events, which are set to begin on December 3rd.
Any future VALORANT maps will likely be added in upcoming Episode and Act updates.
