Xenoblade Chronicles developer making new Legend Of Zelda game

Monolith (not to be confused with Monolith Productions, who make the Shadow Of Mordor games) are a bigger company than many realise, with three main studios, one of which is dedicated to helping out other Nintendo studios and has worked on Splatoon, Super Smash Bros., and… Zelda: Breath Of The Wild.

The most straightforward explanation for what’s going on here is that Monolith are also helping out on the next mainline Zelda game, whether that’s a sequel to Breath Of The Wild or something else.

But it could also be possible they’re making some kind of spin-off that’s entirely their own work.

Previous to these job ads it was thought that Monolith were working on two games: something new from the Xenoblade team and what was previously described as a ‘medieval fantasy’ game.

Hiring for that began in 2017 and as you can see from the artwork above it does look very much like Zelda, so it’s possible that’s what it always was or that the project got transformed into a Zelda game somewhere along the way – something that happens a lot with Nintendo franchises.

And then there’s the fact that Nintendo themselves were already caught hiring people to work on a new Zelda game last year, which adds credence to the idea that Monolith are helping out on a mainline sequel as they did with Breath Of The Wild.

Whatever’s going on it may mean that we’re relatively close to Nintendo making an official announcement. Probably not involving game footage but in the past they’ve announced a name, or released a piece of artwork, fairly early on, before revealing the game proper a year or two later.
