Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 release date leak hints at 2020 launch

Legend of Zelda fans are once again scouring the internet, attempting to sniff out any trace of the sequel to Breath of the Wild.

The second mainline Zelda game announced for Switch at E3 earlier this year has been silent since its big reveal, and Nintendo fans are going mad trying to find more information about the highly-anticipated adventure RPG.

The first trailer for the game revealed that Link and Zelda are working together, exploring a ragged version of Hyrule that looks like it's been through a great deal of hardship – but after that tease we’ve heard nothing about the game.

That is, until this week, where we’ve seen a pretty reliable source spill the beans on the release date for the title.

Twitter user Sabi, who we’ve used before as a pretty reliable leaker for all things Nintendo, says the publisher is suggesting a 2020 release date for the sequel.

Though Sabi notes how Zelda has got a long history of delays when it comes to game releases, it seems internally Nintendo is planning to launch the game next year.

So that’s good news for you helpless Zelda addicts that just can’t wait to get your hands on the next release.

If it seems too early for you to get a new Zelda game, just think about the series’ history with sequels: Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Wind Waker all saw two-year gaps between their release dates.

So a sequel coming out next year doesn’t seem that shocking in comparison.

    • At E3 2019, Nintendo confirmed that the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is now in development for Nintendo Switch.

    Not much is known about the next game in the Legend of Zelda series, but it will most likely conform to the same style and gameplay features as the original.

    Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma explained in an interview with Kotaku that an over-abundance of DLC ideas led to the decision to develop a full-blown sequel.

    The only other solid information we’ve seen about Breath of the Wild comes from a job posting that went live back in September.

    As first reported in a post at SegmentNext, a few months back we saw Breath of the Wild 2 developers post a job listing for a role at Nintendo, working on the upcoming game.

    It was a deliciously vague statement, but one that gives us an insight into how we're going to see the core experience change a little bit: Nintendo notes that the new Zelda game will offer “new gaming experiences that exceed those of the previous game”.

    “For now we can not comment much about the game, but our goal is to offer new gaming experiences that exceed those of the previous game, so we will need the skills of many people to create this new game.

    “That’s the reason we are looking for new terrain designers at Nintendo.”

    Expect lots of fancy vistas and – hopefully – more intricate dungeon design, then.

    Breath of the Wild 2 still goes without an official release date.
