Fallout: New Vegas mod lets you enjoy the wasteland long after the ending
Having finished Fallout: New Vegas twice, I can attest to the bereft feeling that comes after completing its excellent main story arc. Hell, for me it actually came well before that point, whether it was killing Mr. House or wiping out the Brotherhood of Steel on his orders. Either outcome sent me the clear message that New Vegas’ best feature, the sprawling, wide-open land of choice and opportunity for my Courier, had narrowed considerably, and things were now speeding toward a true end — as in, no more playing, not just the conclusion of the story.
New Vegas, revered by the Fallout cognoscenti, now has a proper end-game mod, in which the world goes on after the all-out fight at Hoover Dam. Previous mods allowed players to continue with other side quests and activities after the conclusion. But in terms of continuity, the world was stuck in the moment right before the ending battle, with discordant NPC dialogue and the presence of factions that had been beaten decisively.
Enter “FPGE,” which means simply Functional Post-Game Ending. It’s the work of modder kazopert, who has pumped in a ton of polish and cleanup to make an end-game vision of New Vegas credibly reflect the main arc’s outcome.
“After two weeks, Hoover Dam is taken over by the respective faction and the fighting stops,” kazopert explains. “The Kings will get eradicated by the Legion, if alive, the Brotherhood of Steel will take over Helios One and patrol the roads, and the Great Khans will evacuate their camp, taking everything with them. This is only a small portion of what can take place however, and there are a massive amount of things that change based on how you play.”
As examples, kazpoert gave two pieces of New California Republic citizen and soldier dialogue made anachronistic depending on whether the NCR or the Legion prevails at the dam. These will no longer be heard, depending on the outcome.
“This is only a small selection mind you, but it’s just a demonstration on how much love I’ve poured into this mod. I’ve played New Vegas for years and loved it ever since, so I thought it only appropriate that the game had a proper ending. I’ve considered nearly everything, so worrying about missing content or otherwise shouldn’t be an issue.”
FPGE is available from Nexus Mods. You’ll need a copy of 2010’s Fallout: New Vegas on PC, obviously, and it can’t run alongside any other endgame mods. Instructions for installing it are on the page.
