Sony: PS5 won’t be sold in retail stores on launch day, sales are online only

PlayStation fans who were hoping to secure a launch-day PlayStation 5 console by visiting a retail store in person (or camping out for a first crack at one) seem to be out of luck. Sony says that PS5 sales will be conducted in an online-only capacity on Nov. 12, when the next-gen console launches in North America (and on Nov. 19 in other regions), as a preventive measure during the pandemic.

“In the interest of keeping our gamers, retailers, and staff safe amidst COVID-19, today we are confirming that all day-of launch sales will be conducted through the online stores of our retail partners,” Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Sid Shuman said Thursday in a PlayStation Blog post.

Sony confirmed that “no units will be available in-store for purchase on launch day” and advised customers to “be safe, stay home, and place your order online.”

“Gamers who have pre-ordered for pick-up at their local retailer should still be able to do so at their designated appointment time, under the retailer’s safety protocols,” Sony said. “Please confirm the details with your local retailer.”

PlayStation 5 pre-orders went live in September, shortly after Sony revealed the console’s price points and release dates. But early pre-orders were chaotic, thanks to unclear communication about timing, forcing Sony to apologize amid consumer frustration. Since then, pre-order availability for PS5 has remained elusive for many PlayStation fans. And with potential shipping delays, Sony’s PS5 rollout may take a few extra days before consoles are in players’ hands.

Sony will launch the next-gen PlayStation on Nov. 12 in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. The standard edition of the PS5 costs $499.99, while the PS5 Digital Edition, which does not include an optical disc drive, will cost $399.99.
