The Last Of Us 2 New Gameplay Debuts At Sony State Of Play

We knew The Last of Us 2 was going to be a big part of Sony’s State of Play showcase, and as expected it was a doozy. The presentation ended with a new look at the game, including several new gameplay details and even a release date.

The trailer had moments of gameplay, showing Ellie going horseback riding through the snow, and then being ambushed. From there something awful happened–though the trailer didn’t show exactly what, only a blood-curdling scream. Some time later Ellie appears to go after the people who ambushed her, giving us a look at combat. At the very end, Joel makes an appearance.

In an accompanying announcement, Naughty Dog revealed the various versions of the game you can get: standard, Special Edition, Collector’s Edition, and Ellie Edition. Those include bonuses like a 12″ Ellie statue, replica bracelet, a full-sized recreation of Ellie’s backpack, 7″ vinyl record, and way more. Check out our pre-order guide for more details.

The demonstration notably didn’t seem to consist of what we heard from a recent retailers demo. That one was said to focus on stealth and how Clickers can be used to your advantage, and that wasn’t part of the State of Play presentation. Naughty Dog promises more details to come on September 26, though, which has been dubbed “Outbreak Day.”

The State of Play ended with a release date for The Last of Us 2: February 21, 2020.
