Apple Arcade game Little Orpheus transfers well to the Nintendo Switch

The British developer behind this simple but fun platformer have decided to give the Apple Arcade mobile phone hit a go on Nintendo’s popular console.

And while Little Orpheus isn’t a game changer, so to speak, in the genre, it does provide a decent little exploration game with a lovely narrative hook.

The year is 1962 and NASA is trying to put a man on the moon.

In a remote corner of Siberia, a Soviet cosmonaut is heading in the other direction.

Ivan Ivanovich is dropped into an extinct volcano in his exploration capsule, Little Orpheus, to explore the centre of the Earth.

He promptly vanishes. And three years later he emerges claiming to have saved the world.

You join the game as he retells his story to the Russian authorities in an interrogation, and what sets this apart from other platformers is the rolling commentary from the space ace as you play the game.

It’s smooth to play and involves lots of running away from oversized dinosaurs and monsters, pulling levers and solving basic puzzles to progress to the next bit.

Nothing too taxing and it has all been seen before in other games.

It’s pretty to look at thanks to a remaster for bigger TV-style gameplay.

The title now boasts hi-res textures, new animations, and enhanced graphics and effects thanks to the work by developer The Chinese Room.

And the game is bigger too, with a bonus ninth episode – A Rush of Onion to the Head.

It’s got a real Flash Gordon vibe to it and the humour really helps to stick the landing when it comes to the storytelling.

The voice-acting is cracking and make for regular giggles, if not somewhat stereotyped.

But when it comes to gameplay its fine but not anything to write home about.

A nice game but not a great game.

VERDICT 3/5
