Borderlands 3 guide: Which character should you pick?

When you first jump into Borderlands 3, you’ll need to choose your new Vault Hunter.

If you’re playing in co-op, you only have a few minutes to make the most important decision you’ll make in the campaign. If you’re playing alone, you’ll have more time but only brief descriptions of what Amara, FL4K, Moze, and Zane can do.

That’s where we come in. In this guide, we’ll help you choose a Borderlands 3 class by explaining what makes each unique.

Zane, the Operative

Gearbox Software/2K Games

Zane is more than the typical soldier of the previous Borderlands games.

He has the ability to use two different Action Skills at once. (If you choose to use both, you won’t be able to use grenades.) Zane can use a drone to deal damage for him, drop a shield to buff and protect his allies, or create a clone that he can swap positions with.

If you like having a lot of mobility on the battlefield and tricking enemies with digital clones of yourself, Zane is the way to go. Also, he’s one of the funniest playable characters in the game.

Moze, the Gunner

Gearbox Software/2K Games

Moze is for Borderlands players who like to make things explode — either with giant rockets or a hail of bullets. Most of her skills revolve around mechs, explosions, health, or firing a lot of bullets.

Instead of a choice between three Action Skills, Moze has a giant mech — the Iron bear — that she can summon. Depending on the skill tree you decide to go down with Moze, you’ll gain access to different weapons and abilities for the Iron Bear, as well as abilities that alter Moze’s own potential for destruction.

If you like Blast damage weapons, dealing damage to a group of enemies at once, rarely dying, or not having to reload, Moze and her Iron Bear should be your Vault Hunter of choice.

Amara, the Siren

Gearbox Software/2K Games

Amara fills the series’ classic Siren role in Borderlands 3, but instead of being a squishier magic dealer, Amara takes her fists to the frontline.

Amara can choose from three different abilities: a ground slam, a ranged projection of herself, or a Phaselock ability, which lifts enemies in the air and freezes them for a short time (like Maya from Borderlands 2).

No matter what ability type you select for Amara, she’s still focused on elemental damage. Depending on the tree you go down, you can imbue all of Amara’s skills with a specific element. If you like to mix and match elements against different kinds of enemies or slam your fists into the dirt and make a giant explosion, Amara is the Vault Hunter for you.

FL4K, the Beastmaster

Gearbox Software/2K Games via Polygon

FL4K is the hunter class of previous Borderlands games, but with a constant companion at their side.

This is Borderlands’ first dedicated pet class, and instead of having to summon a pet via a button press — like Zane’s drone — FL4K’s pet is always in play.

FL4K’s Action Skills can send out a shotgun spray of Rakk creatures, turn invisible, or enrage a pet to send into the frontline. FL4K is also the only character with a special attack command. By holding down the Action Skill button, FL4K can direct a pet’s attention to specific enemies.

Most of FL4K’s skills revolve around pet attacks or critical hits. If you want to wander the wasteland with a pet who takes some of the heat from enemies and adds some extra damage output for your part, FL4K is a great choice for you.

FL4K is also voiced by the hilarious ProZD, who has quite a few dry, funny lines throughout the game.
